Resorts World NYC sponsors Big Apple Honor Flight for veterans

May. 22, 2023 By Bill Parry

Resorts World New York City recently sponsored the third Big Apple Honor Flight, the mission that transports veterans from the five boroughs to Washington, D.C., on one-day trips to visit the memorials built in their honor.

The day trips are provided at no cost to the veterans and top priority is given to World War II, Korean War, and terminally ill veterans from all wars.

Resorts World NYC also served as a rallying point ahead of the flights, providing the veterans with a place to meet up with food and drinks before they were bussed, with NYPD highway escorts and motorcycle clubs, to JFK Airport.

“We owe these heroes a huge debt for sacrificing so much in the name of our country,” Resorts World NYC VP of Community Development Michelle Stoddart said. “To be able to honor them with a special journey to visit the memorials of those who were lost alongside them in battle is the least we can do. We hope it was a day they will always remember.”

Councilwoman Joann Ariola recently turned to Resorts World NYC to help solve a transportation dilemma faced by the fifth-grade class at PS 306 in Woodhaven. The students hit a bump in the road when they were planning to travel to and from Citi Field for a Bullying Prevention Performance and Baseball Game on May 18.

“We were able to obtain school buses to bring us back to school,” PS 306 fifth-grade teacher Patricia Molina said. “The Mets organization put me in contact with their charter bus company and they quoted us $1,500 for two buses, handicapped accessible for our two wheelchair-bound students.”

The class was unable to raise the funds required to cover the costs and reached out to Ariola’s district office for assistance. Ariola reached out to community partners at Resorts World NYC, which provided all necessary funding to the students to facilitate their transportation to and from Citi Field.

“Resorts World did not hesitate to step up to the plate and provide the funding that these kids needed to make it to their game,” Ariola said. “They’ve proven to be a valuable partner several times in the past when the community needed assistance, so I had a feeling they might be able to help with this as well. Many of these children have never been to a baseball game before, and thanks to this partnership we’ve given them memories to last a lifetime.”
