A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in the crosswalk while crossing Roosevelt Avenue Friday, police said.

The victim, a female, had the signal when she was hit at around 9:50 a.m. by a motorist who was turning left from 56th Street onto Roosevelt in an eastbound direction. The driver stopped at the scene, according to police.

The woman was struck by the passenger side of the vehicle and her head hit the pavement, police said. She was transported to Elmhurst Hospital with severe head injuries and is unlikely to survive, a NYPD spokesperson said.

The police did not have details as to the age or name of the victim–nor the driver.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.

for sure motorists need to yield.

though, there are plenty of peds completely unaware of their surroundings, dilly-dallying intentionally walking slow (certain folks you know who they are), looking down at their phone, trying to make the light, walking directly in the road in unmarked ped crossings, etc. etc that dont make it easy for drivers to share the road.

peds are not completely absolved from responsibility. why else would schools teach kids to look both ways?

Will there ever be at time when motorists observe the rules of the road and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks? Will moving violations ever be enforced? Start ticketing people and see how much revenue the city will will generate!
