Overwhelming Majority of Public School Parents in Eastern Queens Choose Remote Learning

Sept. 22, 2020 By Allie Griffin

The majority of parents in eastern Queens with children in public school have opted to keep them home to attend classes online.

More than half the students in the eastern Queens school districts will be learning remotely, according to the latest survey results from the New York City Department of Education (DOE).

The city’s public school students are automatically enrolled in a blended learning model in which they attend class in-person on some weekdays and learn remotely on other days. However, parents can choose that their children attend classes remotely five days a week instead if they request it.

The percentage of Northeast Queens students who will learn online is particularly high.

School District 26 — which covers Bayside, Little Neck and other communities near the Long Island border — has the highest percentage of remote students citywide at 60 percent.

Adjacent School District 25 that represents schools in Flushing and College Point wasn’t far behind — 55 percent of public school students in the district will attend classes online.

Meanwhile, 52 percent of School District 28 students in Jamaica will learn remotely and 50 percent of students in each School District 27 and 29 will be remote.

The percentage of online-only students in the five school districts is higher than the citywide percentage of 46 percent, according to the DOE.

More and more parents are choosing to keep their children home from school as the first day of in-person classes approaches for most students.

The number increased following Mayor Bill de Blasio’s announcement last week to push back the first day of in-person school for most students, which was scheduled for Monday.

In western Queens, most parents are choosing to send their kids to school, as part of the blended learning model.

Just 39 percent of children at School District 24 and 43 percent of students at School District 30 are enrolled in full remote learning.

District 24 covers Corona, Ridgewood, Middle Village and more, while District 30 covers Long Island City, Astoria, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Sunnyside and more.
