81-Year-Old Man Dead From Suspected Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Maspeth

The scene outside the building (Citizen)

Dec. 23, 2020 By Michael Dorgan

An 81-year-old man is dead from a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning incident in Maspeth Wednesday.

Nicholas Kehagias was discovered inside a warehouse building, located at 54-19 Flushing Ave., just after noon by police and firefighters, according to the FDNY and NYPD. They were responding to a 911 call of an unconscious man inside the premises.

Kehagias was found unresponsive on a bed with no obvious signs of trauma, police said.

The victim, an Astoria resident, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, police said.

The FDNY said that its firefighters recorded high levels of carbon monoxide gas at the address, although the source of the gas is unclear.

The medical examiner will ultimately determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Carbon monoxide is harmful to breathe because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain and other vital organs of oxygen.

It is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it is odorless and colorless and can go undetected without an effective alarm.
