Federal COVID-19 Vaccine Mega Site to Open in Jamaica Later This Month

A massive COVID-19 vaccination site, specifically for Queens residents, will open in Jamaica later this month.

The federally-run vaccination site will open at York College the week of Feb. 24, Governor Andrew Cuomo and federal officials announced today.

The facility will have the capacity to vaccinate 3,000 people a day, which — along with a second federal site in Brooklyn also announced today — makes it the largest COVID-19 vaccination site in the New York state to date.

All vaccination appointments at York College will be reserved for Queens residents only, Cuomo said.

The site’s vaccine supply is a special allocation from the federal government — separate from the state or city’s weekly allotted dosages.

The facility will be staffed by both federal and state workers, Cuomo said at a press briefing.

The state and federal government selected a site located in Jamaica — a largely minority community — to address the racial inequity illustrated by the pandemic, he added.

The COVID-19 infection rate was three times higher in Black and Hispanic communities across the nation, according to a study done by the National Urban League and John Hopkins Center for Health Equity, Cuomo said.

The two vaccine sites announced today are part of the Biden administration’s program to help the “hardest hit, hardest to reach populations,” White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients said at the briefing.

Cuomo applauded the help from the White House.

“The federal government having separate mass vaccination sites in socially vulnerable communities is a bold step — only the first step; we have to do more,” Cuomo said. “But it’s a bold step that we should all take as a sign of hope and acknowledge of the problem. “

My husband and I are over 65. I went online & easily scheduled an appt for the York college site. My husband was very apprehensive.we don’t usually like to participate in what “we” refer to as “the cattle call” But after arriving at York college we found it to be very organized and extremely accommodating. there was free parking just across the street and the staff was very friendly caring and concerned. We were guided through without a problem no lines no confusion. We received the vaccine from from an experienced registered nurse. We were both quite impressed. 5 thumbs up!

Long Islander ordered to pay restitution for stealing share of Queens Village family home willed to niece: DA

A Long Island man was sentenced Wednesday in Queens Supreme Court for filing fraudulent paperwork to claim he fully owned a Queens Village home when his niece had actually inherited half of it. Wagner Recio, 52, of Butler Boulevard in Elmont, pleaded guilty in December 2022 to filing falsified documents the previous year in order to obtain a mortgage against the value of the Queens Village property and kept the financial proceeds for himself.

According to the charges, Recio and his brother, Alejandro Recio, jointly owned a house on 220th Street in Queens Village as Tenants in Common (TIC), allowing each owner undivided interest to sell, transfer or borrow against their own share in the property.

Op-ed: Making the change: Illegal cannabis stores will now be closed!

May. 1, 2024 By Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato

I am currently writing this in the early hours after intensely debating the State Budget. As your State representative, I have been working to pass fiscal policies that represent the needs of our community. Moments ago, our community scored a tremendous victory as I voted yes and passed into law the hard stance against illegal cannabis shops that we have all asked for. Finally, the law gives law enforcement the ability to close these stores and padlock them shut!
