City Council Candidate Shekar Krishnan racked up yet another endorsement Friday getting the backing of State Sen. John Liu.

Krishnan, who is running to represent the 25th council district, would be the first South Asian to hold city office if elected. The seat is currently held by the term-limited Danny Dromm.

“Shekar’s passion for the Elmhurst and Jackson Heights community is unmatched and his record on the issues speaks for itself,” Liu said in a statement. “Candidates like Shekar make history for the right reasons by winning progress for the people they represent with bold action and boundless care, and I’m excited to see him bring that leadership to the City Council.”

Liu was the first Asian American to be elected to the New York City Council and first Asian American city comptroller. He represented District 20 from 2002 to 2009, and was comptroller from 2010 to 2013.

Krishnan, who has been endorsed by several elected officials and major unions, thanked Liu for his support.

“I have enormous respect for John Liu’s dedication to serving Queens and New York City across two decades of trailblazing victories for AAPI representation in our city and state,” Krishnan said in a statement. “This election is a crucial opportunity to move our city forward on the issues that impact our communities most by fighting for a government that truly reflects those communities.”

Krishnan has been endorsed by Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez; State Senators Julia Salazar and Liu; Assemblymember Catalina Cruz; Councilmembers Costa Constantinides, Justin Brannan and Carlina Rivera; Make the Road; SEIU 32BJ and 1199SEIU and many other unions.

Several candidates running for the 25th District seat are of Asian descent, including Carolyn Tran, Yi Chen and Suraj Jaswal.

All the candidates in the race are people of color. Others vying for the seat include Lucy Cerezo Scully, Alfonso Quiroz, Fatima Baryab, Liliana Melo and Manuel Perez.
