Several candidates are running to represent the 22nd Council District—a position that was recently occupied by Costa Constantinides.

In our latest Podcast, we talk to Nicholas Velkov who is vying for the seat, which covers Astoria as well as sections of East Elmhurst, Woodside and Jackson Heights.

Velkov is an Astoria resident who has owned and operated Yoga Agora, located at 33-02 Broadway, since 2010. His platform focuses heavily on public health and wellbeing.

He will be competing in the Democratic primary on June 22 against Leonardo Bullaro, Tiffany Cabán, John Ciafone, Catherina Gioino and Evie Hantzopoulos.

There are two other candidates running to be represent the district—Edwin DeJesus and Felicia Kalan.

They are not running as Democrats and will therefore not be in the primary. They will be participating in the November general election.

Council Member Francisco Moya led a walk-through along Roosevelt Avenue in Corona with representatives from nearly a dozen city agencies to point out quality-of-life issues that have affected residents and business owners for too long, including the proliferation of massage parlors, unregulated street vending and uncleanliness.

Following the tour, Moya announced he is re-establishing the Roosevelt Avenue Task Force, a multi-agency effort to tackle pressing concerns that was initially created in 1991 but has faltered in recent years.
