Helena Conti was hit by a driver in a blue sedan at around 5:55 p.m. while crossing Cooper Avenue near St. John Cemetery, police said.

Conti, who lived on Dartmouth Street in Forest Hills, was struck midblock — between 82nd Street and 83rd Street, cops said. The driver fled the scene.

Tragically, yet another hit and run fatality. These aren’t mere random acts, which we seem to accept as inevitable occurrences — they’re heinous crimes committed by dangerous, desperate individuals. Society’s collective conscience has been in decline for many years.
