The planters at Travers Park have undergone a makeover with each of them featuring a colorful vibrant mural.
The murals have gone up on 12 planters at the popular park, which is located between 77th and 78th streets on the north side of 34th Avenue. The murals highlight the many immigrant cultures that make up the Jackson Heights community. They also represent the connection and harmony of vegetation, the natural world and humans.
The artwork was designed by Mark Saldana, a Queens-based artist, and were painted by members of a skills training program overseen by the New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) organization. NICE provides a variety of services to local immigrant groups.
The artwork was also done in conjunction with NYC Parks Dept. and Council Member Shaker Krishnan, who represents Jackson Heights/Elmhurst. Krishnan is also the chair of the Council’s Parks Committee.
