A Corona man was arrested Aug. 14 and charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a Brooklyn scooter rider just over a week earlier.
German Zhicay Cando, 50, of 99th Street in North Corona, was taken into custody and booked at the 110th Precinct in Elmhurst for allegedly leaving the scene of the crash that left 36-year-old Amikar Armondo Marquez-Larez to die alone on a quiet tree-lined residential street on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 6.
A preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that Marquez-Larez, of Greenpoint, was motoring southbound on 50th Avenue aboard his 2021 Znen ZN150T motorized scooter just before 5 a.m. when he collided with a white Honda CRV that was traveling eastbound on 97th Street. The impact of the collision threw the victim onto the pavement sustaining severe trauma to his body. Zhicay Cando was allegedly behind the wheel of the SUV that sped away from the scene.
Police from the 110th Precinct responded and found Marquez-Lare unconscious and unresponsive. EMS transported him to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead a short while later, according to the NYPD.
Zhicay Cando is charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in death and driving without a license, according to the NYPD.
