Aug. 22, 2023 By Anthony Medina

The NYPD on Aug. 22 announced the death of a Middle Village resident who was struck by an unlicensed driver in July.

Police say Chung Lun Shao, 88, was crossing Dry Harbor Road between 84th Street and 84th Place, only steps away from his home, on Saturday, July 29, when he was struck by the driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. Shao was transported EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst in stable condition. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff on Aug. 20.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined the driver, Filippo Bonura, 48, of Oceanside, was driving westbound on Dry Harbor Road when he hit Shao while he crossed the street between two parked cars. Bonura remained at the scene and was taken into custody after it was determined that he was operating the truck with a suspended license.

Bonura was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

The investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing.
