Parent association plants daffodil bulbs at Elmhurst school in honor of 9/11, COVID-19 victims

Members of a school parent association in Queens planted more than 1,000 daffodil bulbs earlier this month at an Elmhurst school to honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and COVID-19.

Parents and students from the P.S./I.S. 102Q Parent Association planted the bulbs at the 55-24 Van Horn St. school on Nov. 3 that were donated by New Yorkers for Parks, a nonprofit organization. 

The non-profit has been in existence for over 100 years and aims to protect and promote open spaces across New York. 

In 2001, the organization established The Daffodil Project, where it donates thousands of bulbs to groups across the city in an effort to brighten up the parks and public spaces of New York, while also honoring the victims of 9/11 and COVID-19.

The project represents the largest volunteer effort in New York City history. 

P.S./I.S. 102Q is a Title 1 public school in District 24 that serves children in pre-K to eighth grade. 

The Parent Association provided light refreshments on the day, followed by a brief demonstration on how to plant the daffodil bulbs. The planting of the bulbs took place at the school’s main entrance.
