Mount Sinai Queens has received $3 million from the City Council to purchase new MRI and CT scan machines, Council Member Costa Constantinides announced today.
The allocation builds upon a long-standing partnership between the City Council and the hospital, which has undergone a major expansion in recent years.
The funds come at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for greater investment in the healthcare system–particularly in Queens, officials say.
Mount Sinai is one of two health facilities that serves all of western Queens, along with Elmhurst Hospital. Western Queens was at the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis.
“Mount Sinai Queens saved my life and the lives of many western Queens residents because it puts the health of this community above everything else,” Constantinides, who has been battling COVID in recent weeks, said. “These MRI and CT scan machines will embolden medical professionals to save lives.”
Council Member Karen Koslowitz, chair of the Queens Delegation, said that the delegation was happy to allocate the funds. “Queens appreciates all of the hard work that Mt. Sinai has done and continues to do, especially in the COVID-19 pandemic.”
A spokesperson for Mount Sinai said that the funds would help the hospital improve the medical care it provides.
“The expansion of our imaging services with an additional MRI and CT scanner will improve access to care and enhance the patient experience,” said Caryn A. Schwab, executive director of Mount Sinai Queens.
