The Lewis Latimer House Museum in Flushing is inviting families and individuals of all ages to engage in cultural activities in celebration of Juneteenth on Saturday, June 17.
The event will be held at the Lewis Latimer House Museum, located at 34-41 137th St., from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. featuring a range of exciting activities for participants of all ages.
The event is designed to celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday that marks the end of slavery in the United States.
“By holding this annual event, we aim to honor the contributions of African Americans to American history and provide an opportunity for community members to come together and celebrate the richness of African American culture,” said Yan Ran, executive director of the museum.
The event kicks off with a Poetry and Digital Storytelling workshop led by Quinta Felton, where students can unleash their creativity and bring their poems to life through the free online coding program, Scratch. Artist Shanice Figeroux will lead a Tribal Body Paint session, inspiring participants with Adinkra tribal symbols from the Bono people of Ghana.
At 3 p.m., the Fanike! African Dance Troupe will lead a Drum & Dance workshop, providing an opportunity for participants to learn traditional West African dance movements and rhythms. In addition to these workshops, Reiki Master Teacher Erica Thomas Collier will offer a self-care workshop to promote stress reduction and relaxation.
