Jan. 31, 2024 By Rachel Butler A Queens council member is calling for live animal slaughter markets to be moved outside of New York City following unannounced visits to a market in Ridgewood and another one in Bushwick on Jan. 17.  Council Member Robert Holden, who represents Glendale, Middle Village and surrounding areas, is pushing for the change after visiting the Tiba Live Poultry Slaughter market, located at 905 Wykoff Ave. in Ridgewood, and the Kikiriki Live Poultry market, located at 334 Linden St. in Bushwick, where he alleges the animals are being mistreated. Affordable housing lottery opens in Kew Gardens, rent starts at $1,522 a month

Jan. 30, 2024 By Ethan Marshall A total of 13 affordable units are up for grabs at the Metropolitan Senior Apartments in Kew Gardens, with monthly rents ranging from $1,522-$1,937. The affordable units are part of an 8-story mixed-use building at 132-77 Metropolitan Ave. In total there will be 40 residences in the building, with 27 being market rate. The city has opened a lottery for the 13 affordable units. Two of them are studio, eight are one-bedroom and three are two-bedroom. Jan. 29, 2024 By Athena Dawson A human rights organization hosted a commemoration event at the Hillcrest Jewish Center in Flushing on Sunday Jan. 28 to honor nine Holocaust survivors for the 79th anniversary of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The anniversary, which fell on Jan. 27, marked the day of liberation from the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. Jan. 29, 2024 By Ethan Marshall Vincent Cannizzaro, who spent 19 seasons as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Christ The King High School in Middle Village, died Saturday at the age of 82 following a battle with cancer. During his time as head coach from 1981-1999, Cannizzaro earned 456 wins. Under his leadership, the team won 12 New York State Catholic High School championships, as well as 10 consecutive New York State Federation titles.
