The Shops at Atlas Park honors Ridgewood YMCA and local hero for community service

Dec. 26, 2023 By Anthony Medina

The Shops At Atlas Park proved once again that it is more than just a shopping center by honoring the Ridgewood YMCA and “local hero” volunteer Melvia Harris with a financial contribution this month.

The Glendale mall operators awarded Harris a $500 gift card for her work with the Ridgewood branch of the YMCA of Greater New York, which has served the neighborhoods of Ridgewood, Glendale, Rego Park, and Woodhaven since 1963. Harris and the YMCA were recognized for building a stronger community for current and future generations to come.

“The holidays are about celebrating those who are close to us, and nothing speaks to our hearts and the hearts of our community like children’s faces alight with the joy of the season. Ridgewood YMCA’s mission and the outstanding efforts of Melvia Harris are shining examples of what makes our community so special, and we are honored to support their efforts,” said Peter DeLucia Jr., general manager of The Shops at Atlas Park.

The Glendale retail center also provided the Ridgewood YMCA with a financial contribution that will go toward the nonprofit’s community programs. The mall operators did not disclose the donation amount.

“This donation enables the Y to provide needed programs and services to deserving members of our community: young people; working families; single parents; immigrants; the elderly; and anyone who aspires to a better way of life,” said La-Vena Frances, vice president of field operations, YMCA of Greater New York and executive director of the Ridgewood YMCA. “This gift ensures that the Y continues to provide our neighborhoods with the program opportunities needed most—programs that empower youth, improve health, and strengthen communities.”

The YMCA also awarded Harris with the title of Volunteer of the Year, noting her passion for giving back and always showing up for families and the community when needed.

SUV driver killed after losing control and crashing into a detached garage in Jamaica: NYPD

A 63-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning after he crashed his SUV after losing control of the vehicle on a residential block in Jamaica.

The driver was behind the wheel of a 2015 Toyota Rav4 traveling eastbound on 90th Street shortly after 5 a.m. when he jumped the east curb at the intersection of 143rd Street and drove straight into the driveway of a home at 89-25 143rd St., police said. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that the SUV continued through the driveway before colliding into the detached garage and a parked and unoccupied 2011 Toyota Prius inside the structure. The impact caused the garage to collapse on both vehicles, trapping the Rav4 driver.
