An 18-year-old Elmhurst woman is dead after the vehicle she was in crashed on the Long Island Expressway during the early hours Thursday morning.

Katherine Lin, who was killed in the crash, was one of two passengers in a 2018 BMW 320i that was traveling at a high rate of speed going westbound on the expressway at around 12:20 a.m.—by the Van Wyck Expressway.

The driver, a 20-year-old man, lost control of the vehicle and suddenly veered into a guardrail, causing the vehicle to overturn. EMS responded and transported the driver to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst in critical but stable condition.

Lin, who was seated behind the driver, was taken by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst, where she was pronounced deceased. The other passenger, also an 18-year-old female, was transported by EMS to New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Queens in critical but stable condition.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and the investigation, which is being conducted by the NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad, remains ongoing.
