The eighth annual LIC Bulbfest will take place Saturday and around 200 volunteers have already signed up to take part.
LIC Bulbfest, which is organized by the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy (HPPC), will see volunteers plant thousands of bulbs in Hunters Point South Park and Gantry Plaza State Park on Nov. 5. The HPPC is a voluntary group, which helps with the upkeep of the park.
Organizers are still looking for volunteers to sign up and help put down 20,000 bulbs which would beat last year’s record of 15,000 bulbs being planted.
The event is set to kick off at 9:30 a.m. and volunteers are asked to meet at the plaza in Gantry Plaza State Park near Center Boulevard between 48th and 49th Avenues.
Instructions on how to plant bulbs will be given at that time and volunteers of all ages are welcome, the HPPC said. Volunteers will plant a variety of tulip, daffodil and allium bulbs with the event wrapping up at around 12:30 p.m.
A combined total of nearly 57,000 bulbs have been planted at the last seven events and the HPPC is hoping that this year’s planting will lead to remarkable spring blooms.

All of the bulbs that will be planted are being donated by the Van Zyverden Company, a Mississippi-based flower bulb company, while Amazon is sponsoring the event.
HPPC President Rob Basch said the group is excited about continuing LIC Bulbfest for another year.
“Last year’s blooms were highlighted by the numerous purple alliums shining throughout the park,” Basch said.
“This year we look forward to another burst of color that welcomes spring. See everyone on the fifth!”
The HPPC will provide gardening gloves and tools while there will also be free refreshments and snacks available. There will be face painting for kids too.
