GoFundMe launched to support teenage girl who was critically wounded in St. Albans shooting

May. 16, 2023 By Carlotta Mohamed

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help support a teenage girl who remains in critical condition after she was shot in the head in an elementary school playground in St. Albans on May 10.

Claudia Quaatey, 16, suffered a severe brain injury and is currently on life support as her loved ones remain by her side hoping and praying for a miracle.

“Claudia has always been the first to offer help whenever needed and this is her moment of need,” said Benita Bortay, the organizer of the GoFundMe. “If Claudia’s story or graceful presence has left an indelible mark on your life, we ask that you please offer her your thoughts and prayers in this time of need.”

On the night of May 10, police received a 911 call at approximately 8:30 p.m. regarding a shooting at 121-14 Lucas St. Upon their arrival, officers from the 113th Precinct found Quaatey suffering from a gunshot wound to her head, according to authorities.

Quaatey was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. Authorities believe that Quaatey, who was sitting inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting, was not the intended target. No arrests have been and the investigation remains ongoing, according to police.

Quaatey’s family is still in search of resources and potential treatments to help aid in prolonging her life, according to Bortay. The family is requesting donations that will go toward medical expenses, as well as any other expenses incurred for Quaatey’s health and justice.

Quaatey is known as a “beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece and friend.” She is a sophomore at Queens High School of Teaching and a loved member of the Jamaica community, according to Bortay.

In her free time, Quaatey enjoys running track, dancing, styling hair, and spending time with family and friends. She aspires to become a nurse and has always been compassionate towards others.

The family’s initial fundraising goal is $75,000. To date, they have received 285 donations totaling $11,470.

“We please ask that you support Claudia and help this GoFundMe reach as many people as possible,” Bortay said.
