Assembly Member Catalina Cruz has endorsed City Council candidate Shekar Krishnan for the 25th district council seat now held by Danny Dromm.

“I am proud to support Shekar because he has been helping build a coalition for progressive change in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst for years,” the assemblywoman tweeted this afternoon.

Krishnan is a community activist and civil rights lawyer. He co-founded Communities Resist — a legal services organization that represents low-income tenants and neighborhood coalitions in north Brooklyn and Queens — as well as the local volunteer group Friends of Diversity Plaza.

His platforms include working to make housing affordable, advocating for racial justice and defunding the police.

The Jackson Heights resident is one of nine candidates running to represent District 25, a position now held by Dromm who is unable to run again due to term limits. The other candidates are Fatima Baryab, Lucy Cerezo Scully, Yi “Andy” Chen, Suraj Jaswal, Liliana Melo, Manuel  Perez, Alfonso Quiroz, and Carolyn Tran.

A primary for the seat is scheduled to take place June 22. The winner is almost certain to be voted into office in the general election.

Krishnan had announced his candidacy in November during a news conference at Travers Park, and spoke to the Queens Post the following month.

“It is more important than ever that we have a fighter representing us, someone who has the vision and experience to confront the systemic injustices we face,” he said.

Cruz agreed in her statement that if elected Krishnan would “fight for our community.”

“He has the best platform and the most detailed policies to transform our city to work for everyone,” Cruz wrote on Twitter.

Krishnan’s campaign has also been endorsed by Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez.
