A networking expo that aims to empower young women through health, business and finance workshops will take place this Saturday in Jamaica.

The free event is being hosted by Positive Women United, a group formed in 2013 that aims to inspire young women and help female-business owners.

The expo is being held at the Harvest Room, located at 90-40 160th Street, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will be the organization’s largest since it was formed and will be its first in-person event since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The organizers anticipate that there will be more than 100 attendees.

There will be three guest speakers hosting workshops, including Julia Shaw, a public relations and event management specialist, Jessica Wong, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual, and Rahnni Sumler, a technical writer who specializes in helping women-owned or minority-owned business enterprises procure government contracts.

The organization will also honor four people of distinction for their service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The recipients of the “Social Impact Awards” will be Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; Queens Deputy Borough President Rhonda Binda; Queens Community Board 12 District Manager Yvonne Reddick; and Hope Knight, CEO of Greater Jamaica Development Corporation.

Sylvia Cothia, the non-profit organization’s founder and president, said that the organization aims to host the event annually. She established the organization as a vehicle to boost young women through mentorships, etiquette workshops and discussions about topics relevant to the community.

The organization has organized several events in the past. These include workshops for black women interested in working in mass media to fundraisers for female victims of natural disasters. The group held an event focused on women’s health in March.

People interested in attending the expo should register here.

Ridgewood mother and daughter arrested for attacking woman over parking spot: NYPD

A Ridgewood mother and daughter were arrested Monday after they ambushed a young Black woman who tried to park her car in a spot in front of their apartment building that they frequently cordon off with garbage cans and traffic cones.

A family friend was standing at the northeast corner of Onderdonk Avenue and Putnam Avenue at around 7:30 p.m. when the 21-year-old Jada McPherson tried to park her car in the spot. The man placed a garbage can in her way. She drove off and circled the block multiple times. She tried to pull into the same spot one more time, but the man tried to stop her again. McPherson got out of her car to confront him, and an argument ensued.
