A Corona man was officially charged with attempted murder and other crimes Monday night for violently assaulting and stabbing his cousin last month, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Edward Huerta, 21, of 108th Street, was arraigned Wednesday before Queens Criminal Court Judge Diego Friere on a complaint charging him with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

According to the charges, on the evening of Dec. 2, Huerta was with his female cousin inside the apartment they shared on 108th Street near Roosevelt Avenue. Witnesses reportedly heard the 19-year-old victim, Ana Lucia Quiroz Chimborazo, screaming. Huerta allegedly barricaded his roommate inside the apartment and violently attacked her, striking her multiple times with a baseball bat.

Huerta allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times in her face, chest and arms.

Other family members attempted to enter the apartment, which Huerta fled by jumping out the window. Police from the 115th Precinct in Jackson Heights responded to the scene and cornered Huerta near his residence.

Huerta allegedly told them, “I wanted to die with her. I wanted to commit suicide with her.”

The victim was found lying unconscious on her bed following the attack.

EMS rushed her to Elmhurst Hospital Center for treatment of her injuries, including a laceration to her face, a skull fracture, bleeding on her brain and other trauma wounds, according to prosecutors. The defendant was also taken to the hospital.

“At the center of domestic violence prosecutions is the brutality and intimidation batterers use to impose their will on their victims,” Katz said. “We will hold accountable the person who is allegedly responsible for this savage assault that has left a young woman fighting for her life.”

Judge Friere ordered Huerta to return to court on Jan. 6. If convicted, Huerta faces up to 25 years in prison.
