A man who stabbed his girlfriend to death inside their Corona apartment in 2020 was sentenced to more than two decades in prison Monday.

Edwin Sarmiento, 31, who had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter at Queens Supreme Court last month, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for fatally stabbing 30-year-old Juliet Ximena Galindo Puentes after getting into an argument with her inside their Van Cleef Street apartment.

The dispute took place just after 4 a.m. on Feb. 8, 2020 inside their bedroom, which was located on the third floor of 58-27 Van Cleef St., according to the Queens District Attorney.

The argument escalated and Sarmiento grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim a number of times, prosecutors said.

He then got a bigger knife in the kitchen and stabbed her several more times after breaking down the bedroom door. Puentes had shut the door and was hiding inside the bedroom, according to the charges.

Sarmiento then fled the scene in his blood-soaked clothes but was apprehended a short time later at a nearby gas station. He was caught with a bag full of cash, phones, passports and other belongings.

“The defendant showed no mercy when he grabbed multiple knives and plunged them into the body of this defenseless woman,” Katz said.

‘With this last step in our judicial process, the defendant has been sentenced by the court giving the family of the victim closure.”

Sarmiento was also sentenced to five years post-release supervision.
