Gunman remains at large following mysterious shooting in front of Jamaica bodega: NYPD

Jul. 14, 2023 By Bill Parry

Detectives from the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica are still trying to piece together a motive behind a shooting in front of a corner bodega on Sutphin Boulevard late last month.

The puzzling shooting went down in front of the Star Deli and Grill, located at 106-32 Sutphin Blvd. near Tuskegee Airmen Way, on the night of June 27, when two men “acting in concert” came up on the 36-year-old man who was standing on the corner and threw him to the ground. The assailants then shot him in his torso. The victim was transported by private means to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

Sharod Elmore, 27, a resident of the Polo Grounds Houses in Harlem, was taken into custody a short while later and he was booked at the 103rd Precinct where he was charged with attempted murder, two robbery counts and criminal possession of a weapon. His accomplice remains at large. Detectives have not determined a motive behind the shooting or if there is any indication that the incident was gang-related, according to a police spokesman.

The NYPD released surveillance video of the suspect from inside the deli and described him as having a dark complexion, approximately 5’6” to 5’7” tall with an average build. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, gray jeans and white sneakers.

A reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information that leads to his arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
