Northwell Health, the large healthcare provider, is increasing its presence in Long Island City.
The company confirmed Friday that it is leasing 42,000 square feet at One Court Square. It will be opening a 3,400 square foot urgent care facility on the ground floor and will occupy office space on the third and fourth floors.
The building, which is 53-stories tall and owned by Savanna, was the longtime home of Citigroup, which left the space in 2020 when its lease expired. The banking giant occupied 400,000 square feet at the time, with the building featuring its iconic logo. The bank at one time occupied most of the 1.5 million square foot building, which opened in 1990.
The expansion into One Court Square, as first reported by the Commercial Observer, represents Northwell’s growing footprint in western Queens. The company has a pediatrics center at 2-20 50th Ave. and an obstetrics and gynecology clinic at 2-24 50th Ave. It also has Astoria and Sunnyside locations.
The building came into focus in 2018 when Amazon said it planned to rent 1 million square feet in the tower—in addition to developing a campus by Anable Basin in Long Island City.
Amazon was going to take the space Citigroup and other tenants were exiting.
The Amazon deal collapsed on Valentine’s Day 2019 leaving Savanna without a tenant to replace Citigroup and other companies.
Savanna, however, has found new tenants since, with health care company Centene and cable network provider Altice USA taking space.
Centene has leased 500,000 square feet in the building, with Altice about 100,000 square feet. The building now has the Altice logo.
The New York City School Construction Authority announced last year that it was taking 350,000 square feet in the building by 2024. It will house its office staff, occupying 11 floors in the tower.
The School Construction Authority will relocate from 30-30 Thomson Ave., which is also in Long Island City.
