Dec. 11, 2020 By Christian Murray

Nearly 20 candidates have come forward to run in next June’s Democratic primary for the 26th District Council seat currently held by Jimmy Van Bramer.

We spoke to Amit S. Bagga who is one of those candidates vying for the seat that covers Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and a portion of Astoria.

Van Bramer is term limited and has to step down at the end of 2021.

Bagga is a resident of Woodside and a native New Yorker. He says he is proud to be queer, South Asian and the son of immigrants.

Prior to the launch of his campaign, Bagga ran the City’s census campaign as Deputy Director, assisting more than 470,000 households in the count.

Bagga says he has been on the front lines for nearly 15 years, fighting for immigrants, workers, consumers, families, as well as Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ New Yorkers through campaigns, non-profits, and most extensively, through federal and city government.

Burglar caught on camera raising a glass of stolen liquor inside Kew Gardens Hills synagogue: NYPD

Police from the 107th Precinct in Fresh Meadows are looking for a burglar who allegedly broke into a Kew Gardens Hills synagogue in broad daylight last month and slaked his thirst for liquor.

At around 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, the suspect broke into Yeshiva Hashevaynu, a Shul located in a one-family home at 144-49 72nd Dr., at around 3 p.m. by manipulating a lock on a basement door with a wire coat hanger, police said on Thursday. Once inside, the culprit found two bottles of booze and used a plastic cup to drink up, but not before he was captured on a security camera toasting whoever viewed the images.
