Nearly 20 candidates have come forward to run in June’s Democratic primary for the 26th District Council seat currently held by Jimmy Van Bramer.
In today’s podcast we speak to Ebony Young, who is one of those candidates vying for the seat that covers Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and a portion of Astoria.
Young is a resident of Woodside and has spent most of her career working in the non-profit sector. She spent 19-years serving as an Executive Director with the YMCA – nine of which were at the Long Island City YMCA, where she worked with children and families.
She also spent 18 months working for TF Cornerstone, where she was in charge of the company’s corporate responsibility unit–dealing largely with local non-profits.
Young, if elected, said she would focus heavily on helping people improve their economic wellbeing.
To that end, she says she would make sure that students have access to technology and a quality education; that residents would have the opportunity to get high paying jobs; and that small businesses and entrepreneurs would get the help they need.
Young also plans to ensure that residents have safe and fair housing; access to quality care for children; and services for immigrants.
