Several candidates are running to represent the 25th Council District—a position that is currently occupied by the term-limited Danny Dromm.
In our latest podcast, we talk to Carolyn Tran who is one of the candidates campaigning for the seat.
Tran, who is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, is one of nine candidates vying for the seat that covers Jackson Heights and Elmhurst. The primary is scheduled to take place on June 22.
Tran would take office with plenty of experience if elected.
She worked for Dromm for approximately a decade, first as an intern—before being appointed to handle constituent services. She was later promoted to chief of staff and served Dromm in this position for five years, until earlier this year.
Tran discusses in the podcast the need for more park space in the district; her support of open streets, such as on 34th Avenue; the need for Medicare for All; and how she is an advocate for reducing the NYPD budget.
Tran, who graduated from San Francisco State University after studying Asian-American studies, moved to Queens in 2009. She joined Dromm’s office in 2010.
She has been endorsed by State Sen. Jessica Ramos, who has been campaigning for her.
“I want @iamcarolyntran to be my councilwoman,” Ramos tweeted in March. “As a single mom with 11+ years of experience working for us, she will ensure our economic recovery is WOC-focused.”
The other candidates in the race include Fatima Baryab; Yi (Andy) Chen; Suraj Jaswal; Shekar Krishnan; Liliana Melo; Manuel Perez; Alfonso Quiroz and William Salgado.

2–I like her focus on open-space, greenspace issues. It’s a crying shame how little we have here. Has she considered trying to get the Newtown HS Athletic Field (just north of the Queens Center Mall) opened up for use by the public–at least during non-school hours, with HS teams having first dibs when they need it for games or practice?
