Rep. Carolyn Maloney to Run for Re-Election in 2022

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who represents the 12th Congressional District, announced Wednesday that she plans to run for re-election next year.

Maloney, 75, whose district includes western Queens as well as sections of Manhattan and north Brooklyn, said her record of delivering real results to constituents shows she deserves to serve another term.

In announcing her campaign bid, Maloney listed her past achievements in Congress such as introducing legislation to ensure federal workers get paid sick leave, helping create a permanent compensation fund for 9/11 first responders and securing federal funding to help New York City recover from the pandemic.

“I know how to get things done and deliver results to my constituents,” she said in a statement.

Maloney, who has been a member of Congress for roughly three decades, also said she is the right person to help the city recover from the pandemic.

“Now more than ever, our city needs innovative leaders to spearhead our rebuilding from the COVID-19 crisis, and I am proud to say that I have started rolling up my sleeves,” she said. “From securing federal funding to help New Yorkers get vaccinated, pay their rent, and feed their families, I have led efforts that will enable New York City and New York State to build back better.”

Her platform goals including passing the Green New Deal, extending the 2nd Avenue subway line and prioritizing a high-speed rail link between New York and Boston, she said.

Maloney faced a tough challenge from progressive candidate Suraj Patel in last year’s Democratic primary. She won by about 3,000 votes, following a court challenge.

Patel, an attorney who also challenged Maloney in 2018, plans to run against her again next year, according to news reports.

Maloney was first elected to the 14th Congressional District in 1992 and has represented the 12th Congressional District since 2013. The district includes Astoria, Long Island City and parts of Woodside, as well as the east side of Manhattan and Greenpoint in Brooklyn.
