Senior attacked inside a Long Island City subway station during the morning rush Monday: NYPD

A 75-year-old man was assaulted by a stranger inside the Vernon Boulevard/Jackson Avenue 7 train station on Monday morning.

Police from the 108th Precinct in Long Island City and Transit District 20 reported that the victim was standing on the mezzanine level of the station at around 8:40 a.m. when an unidentified man approached him from behind and punched him in the back.

The senior sustained pain and bruises to his back, but refused medical attention at the scene. His assailant fled the station on foot in an unknown direction, police said, adding that there are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

The NYPD released surveillance images of the perpetrator as he passed through the turnstile and described him as having a dark complexion, approximately 5’7” tall, and 150 lbs. He wore a black T-shirt, black pants, black sneakers, and a black book bag. A reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information that leads to his arrest.

Through June 16, the 108th Precinct has reported 107 assaults so far in 2024, 3 more than the 104 reported at the same point last year, an increase of 2.9%, according to the most recent CompStat report. Transit crimes are way down in the precinct, with 25 cases reported so far this year, 17 fewer than the 42 transit crimes that were reported at the same point in 2023, a decline of 40.5%, according to CompStat.

A Queens grand jury indicted seven teenagers for attempted murder, gang assault, robbery, and other crimes for an attack on two girls inside Kissena Park in Flushing in early May.

The defendants, who are all 17 years old, were variously arraigned in Queens Supreme Court between June 4 and Wednesday in two separate 25-count indictments with two counts of attempted murder in the second degree. If convicted, they face up to 25 years in prison.
