The board of Socrates Sculpture Park named a new interim director this week as the search for a permanent director continues.
Suzy Delvalle was named interim director of the Long Island City park following the departure of former Executive Director John Hatfield. The park is located at 32-01 Vernon Blvd. and the non-profit oversees the public art production and socially inspired events at the 5-acre waterfront location.
Hatfield announced in October 2020 that he would step down from the role after having served as executive director of the organization for nine years. His last day was July 9.
Delvalle fills the void having decades of leadership experience in the cultural sector. She most recently served as president and executive director of Creative Capital, a national nonprofit organization that supports artists with funding, counsel and career development services.

“I am honored to support Socrates Sculpture Park during this time of transition, and I want to thank the Board of Directors for this tremendous opportunity,” Delvalle said. “I look forward to working
with Socrates’ rich family of artists, staff and collaborators, as well as the surrounding
community.”
Under her leadership, Creative Capital increased its annual operating budget 20 percent, further developed the board with twelve new active members while also establishing a National Advisory Council, and expanded services to artists by instituting annual Creative Capital Awards and retreats.
“The Board is excited that Suzy is serving as Interim Director during this important time for
the organization,” Board Secretary and Treasurer Ivana Mestrovic said. “Suzy brings a wealth
of experience working with artists and communities, and we have the utmost faith in her
ability to lead Socrates as we continue our search for a permanent Executive Director.”
Hatfield will be joining the faculty of New York University in September to teach a course in Museum Studies. He will continue to serve in an advisory capacity for Socrates while it builds a permanent structure at the waterfront park.
The Board has also appointed a transition committee and retained consultants to lead the search for a new director.
