A soon-to-close Stop & Shop supermarket in Long Island City will be replaced by a big-name chain that was founded in Woodside.

The Stop & Shop store on 48th Street will close Thursday but it will be replaced by H-Mart, a New Jersey-based supermarket that specializes in Asian food items. H Mart first opened in 1982 at 59-18 Woodside Ave.

A spokesperson for H Mart confirmed news of the opening to the Queens Post Friday, although he did not provide an opening date.

“We are currently finalizing our opening plan and [an opening date] will be announced in a month or so,” Sam Q. Kim, executive director at H Mart said in a statement.

H Mart currently operates more than 70 locations throughout the U.S. It also has stores in Canada and the U.K.

The 34-51 48th St. location will be the chain’s seventh location in Queens, and twelfth in New York, according to the company’s website. The Woodside location is not affiliated with the chain and is currently closed for renovations.

H Mart is known for offering imported Asian food items such as instant noodles, rices, snacks and a range of other packaged grocery items. It also offers seafood as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Some of its stores come with food courts although it is unclear if the Long Island City location will have one.

The “H” in the company’s name stands for “han ah reum,” a Korean phrase that roughly translates to “one arm full of groceries,” according to the New Yorker.

News of the opening was first reported by Patch. Rumors of the opening first surfaced on Nextdoor and Reddit Wednesday.
