Western Queens is filled with many things to do outside right now. Whether you prefer the tranquility of an early morning by the water or the beauty of a sunset stroll, there is something for everyone. 

From family-friendly events to enticing dinners and drinks, healthy fitness classes and more, indulge in the endless activities summer has to offer and check out some of these waterfront hot spots.

Anable Basin

Anable Basin Sailing Bar and Grill | 4-40 44th Dr., LIC

Anable is a hidden gem in the neighborhood that offers a lowkey night out with a beautiful view of the skyline and a simple menu of classics like grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, corn on the cob, shrimp rolls and more. Pair that with a beer or mixed drink from their bar and music, and you have all of the makings of a perfect summer evening.

Queensbridge Park

Cardio Sculpt Class | Queensbridge Park, Vernon Blvd., LIC

Enjoy this free one-hour class every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. in Queensbridge Park. There is no better way to start your morning than getting your body moving and finding balance and harmony in nature with a beautiful view of the waterfront. Bring a yoga mat with you and join in on the fun.

Frank Ottomanelli’s

Frank Ottomanelli’s LIC | 52-10 Center Blvd., LIC

Ottomanelli’s is a neighborhood staple from Woodside that expanded to LIC to let guests enjoy prime meats with a breathtaking view. From their delicious burgers to shakes and ice cream and a dining area right in Hunter’s Point South Park, this restaurant offers a memorable night out in the summer.

Astoria Park Great Lawn

Summer movie series/summer concert series | Astoria Park Great Lawn on Shore Blvd. between Hell Gate Bridge and the pool

Central Astoria is a non-profit organization that offers outdoor movie nights and concerts every summer, and this year is bound to be no different. It will bring the community together for more memorable nights out on the Great Lawn. Go to their Instagram page to see what movies they have in store and check out which bands and singers will also perform throughout the summer.

Sunset Meditation | Socrates Park 32-01 Vernon Blvd., Astoria

The free class takes place every Tuesday evening from 7-8 p.m. and offers mindful breathing, mindful movement and loving-kindness meditation. Bring a yoga mat or something comfortable to sit on and indulge in the moment while basking in a spectacular sunset in this class led by Mindful Astoria.

Hunters Point Library

Classes at Queens Public Library at Hunters Point | 47-40 Center Blvd., LIC

This impressively gorgeous library is like no other and is coupled with a breathtaking waterfront view of the water. Join in on their book club, which meets once a month, or check out some of their writing workshops and classes that offer a chance to try something new and meet new people. 

HPPC

Events and classes with Hunters Point Parks Conservancy | Center Blvd., LIC

Hunters Point Parks Conservancy hosts events from movie nights on the waterfront, to fitness classes, the Queensboro Dance Festival, painting classes, and much more. During the summer they have something to offer nearly every day and you can check out their calendar on their website or go to their Instagram page to view all of their events.

Noguchi Museum

Noguchi Museum | 9-01 33rd Rd., Astoria

If you are looking for a break from the heat, then check out Noguchi’s for an afternoon of history and art right down the street from the waterfront at Rainey Park and the Socrates Sculpture Park. You can check out their website for current exhibits and workshops that they offer and complete your day by stopping by one of the nearby parks afterward to enjoy the waterfront view.

BFMNY

Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York’s Guelaguetza | 32-01 Vernon Blvd., Astoria

The BFMNY dance group is holding its annual Guelaguetza Festival on Sunday, July 28, from 12-6 p.m. in Socrates Park. This free event celebrates Mexican culture, including traditional garments and celebration through song and dance, as well as other fun surprises throughout the day.

The city’s first homicide of the year went down in an Elmhurst karaoke bar

New York City’s first murder in 2024 occurred on New Year’s Day when a Manhattan bouncer stabbed two men outside an Elmhurst karaoke bar near 76th Street and Roosevelt Ave. just before 4 a.m. Torrance Holmes, 35, of Hamilton Heights, was arrested by detectives days later at his home and transported back to Queens to face justice.

Southeast Queens drug trafficking crew dismantled in Jamaica following two-year probe: DA

A Queens grand jury indicted nine men on charges of conspiracy, drug trafficking, and other related crimes following an extensive two-year investigation into a Jamaica-based narcotics crew, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The probe was conducted by her Major Economic Crimes Bureau and the NYPD. Dubbed “Operation the Price is Right,” this probe included a series of undercover drug buys and the use of electronic surveillance. Approximately 466 grams of cocaine, 91 grams of heroin and 288 grams of deadly fentanyl were seized at several locations that were raided. Just two milligrams of fentanyl is considered to be a lethal dose.
